Still have questions?
It all depends on the duration and type of stay you’re planning.
For a long-term stay, you will need a first-euro international health insurance (such as First’Expat+), which operates independently without relying on a local Social Security body.
If you live in France and are covered by the French healthcare system, you can also opt for the CFE (Caisse des Français de l’Étranger) top-up insurance. The CFE is the equivalent of the French Social Security and will allow you to maintain continuity of coverage with the French healthcare system while living abroad.
Then, among all the different international health insurance solutions available, the choice will depend on your situation, your country of destination and your specific needs: routine healthcare coverage, medicines, maternity, daily allowance in case of incapacity to work, or even assistance in returning to your home country.
💡 Good to know: some countries require proof of a comprehensive expatriate health insurance plan before issuing a visa. In all cases, here’s our advice: compare the various solutions available and their options to find the most appropriate plan based on your health condition and your budget. Check the local requirements before leaving and don’t hesitate to contact our MSH experts to get recommendations according to your destination.
The right international health insurance is above all one that perfectly matches your actual circumstances: your destination, your age, your health condition and your coverage needs. A proper international health insurance plan must at least cover routine healthcare, hospitalization and repatriation.
It should cost between €33 and €83 per month on average. The price of insurance varies according to your country of residence, your age and the chosen level of benefits — worldwide coverage including the USA or the UK will of course be more expensive.
A young individual moving to Canada will not have the same needs as a family settling in Singapore. Again, it all depends on your profile and your needs! At MSH, our plans are designed to adapt to each expatriate profile. Request a personalized quote to compare the various packages available for your destination.
The quality of the medical network provided by your international health insurance in your country of destination is a key asset. Check that there are high-quality facilities near your future place of residence. Digital services make the administration of your plan significantly easier: mobile application, teleconsultations, fast reimbursements.
A few benefits are absolutely essential and non-negotiable: coverage of hospitalization, routine medical consultations, prescription medicines and above all repatriation assistance, the cost of which can exceed €40,000 if you don’t have the right coverage.
Your plan must include three key benefits:
- hospitalization is the #1 priority, with coverage limits adapted to your place of residence.
- health repatriation is your lifesaver in case of serious issue. This benefit, which is usually included in your international health insurance, helps you avoid astronomical bills, especially in emergency situations following an accident or when you are in remote destinations (where medical transportation can cost more than €100,000).
- 24/7 medical assistance completes these core benefits. Imagine that you have an emergency at 3am in Bangkok: thanks to this benefit, you can be put in touch with professionals speaking your language who will coordinate your care.
Also remember to check the waiting periods (the period following your enrollment during which some benefits are not yet effective), upper limits of coverage and any exclusions related to existing medical conditions, as they can increase the amount of your premium.
✏️ Good to know: the average price of quality international health insurance varies between €400 and €1,000 per year, but can reach €7,000/year for a single individual in the United States, where medical expenses are among the highest in the world. Your destination remains the first factor affecting pricing.
At MSH, our packages are flexible: you can choose your level of coverage according to your budget and your actual needs, without paying for unnecessary benefits.
Some plans (including those of MSH) also include personal liability coverage. A valuable protection against any accidental damage that you could cause to third parties during your time abroad.
Generally speaking, your adventures abroad won’t be covered by the basic health insurance scheme from which you benefit in your country of origin. The NHS for instance does not provide international coverage, and most US plans offer limited reimbursements if you’re out of the US territory. For European countries, the French Social Security also significantly limits its reimbursements outside France and the European Health Insurance Card only works for short stays abroad, and mainly in Europe.
And what about your usual complementary health insurance? It also has limits once you cross the borders. Reimbursements rates are lower (just like coverage limits) compared with the healthcare costs charged worldwide.
Let’s take a concrete example: medical consultations in the USA can easily reach $300 and your health insurance in your home country will only reimburse a few tens of euros. The gap becomes huge in the event of hospitalization, as it can cost several thousand dollars per day.
This is precisely the type of situation that international health insurance for expatriates is designed to prevent. It provides you with coverage adapted to the economic realities of your country of residence, with benefits specifically designed for expatriation.
First-euro insurance is a comprehensive international health insurance solution which covers you from the first expense incurred for your healthcare. Unlike traditional complementary insurance which tops up reimbursements from the public health insurance scheme (Social Security or the CFE for French citizens), first-euro coverage can be purchased as a standalone policy.
It doesn’t require to be covered under a public scheme like the CFE. You can take out expatriate insurance such as First’Expat+ at any time, according to your needs.
Only one entity (MSH) manages your reimbursements, on the basis of your actual healthcare costs and the purchased benefits and coverage limits.
In short, it’s the perfect solution for expatriates who are looking for easy plan management, strong benefits and efficient international health insurance!
Yes! In the event of planned or emergency hospitalization, your international 1st euro or top-up health insurance generally allows you to avoid paying upfront.
We settle the invoice as soon as we receive the request for precertification from the healthcare facility. This way, you don’t have to use your savings to pay medical expenses that can be very high when you’re abroad (sometimes several thousand euros in the USA or in the United Arab Emirates for example).
For routine healthcare (such as pharmaceutical expenses), you only need to send us your claim via your Members’ Area or your MSH Mobile App, and you’ll get reimbursed.
This international health insurance has been specifically designed for individuals moving abroad or traveling for a long time (more than a year). Key information:
- Minimum enrollment period: You can sign up for the First’Expat+ international health insurance for a minimum period of 6 months.
- Renewal: the plan is automatically renewed each year on its anniversary date.
- Termination: you can put an end to your plan by sending us a termination letter before the renewal date.
Don’t worry, there’s no nationality requirements. First’Expat+ is for all expatriates, whatever their professional situation — employee with a local employment contract, freelancer, entrepreneur or non-working accompanying individual. All individuals living abroad and aged between 18 and 70 (inclusive) are eligible for coverage. You can also add dependents to your plan in order to protect them while they’re abroad. This means that your spouse and your children under 18 will benefit from the same coverage and benefits as you, under the same insurance plan.
✏️ Important: a medical questionnaire must be completed when purchasing the plan. According to your health status, some existing conditions may be excluded from the plan or increase your premium. Plan ahead before your departure and enjoy complete peace of mind when you arrive at your destination.
First’Expat+ can be taken out up to and including the age of 70, making it a suitable solution for both young professionals and expatriate retirees who can no longer rely on the local basic pension scheme to cover their healthcare costs abroad.
